Joseph Morte at ADT in the Pleasanton CA office told us we were signing up for a month-to-month contract which could be cancelled at anytime. "Nothing to lose" Joe said.

In a classic bait-and-swith he put us on a 2 year contract that has a $500 early termination fee. We've spent almost 6 months trying to resolve our problem with ADT and every manager tells us the same thing "nothing we can do". Google "ADT lied", we are not alone. ADT protects your home while stealing from your wallet.

Sorry, but I cannot recommend ADT Security.

I was a 10 year customer and moved. When I called, they said a new 3 year contract was required at the new address and told me I could be released after 1 year since they "understand people sometimes move after their first year lease is up." I signed the 3 year contract even though I did not see that in writing, so it's my own fault that I trusted them.

I moved after 1 year and called them to cancel.

I had to pay about $760 for the final bill. Right after I told the woman it was not personal but I would never do business with them again, she asked me if I would like to sign up with them at the new address!

All these people claiming to work for ADT are frauds. They are just customers who are upset with ADT and are trying to make ADT look bad.

This whole site is a joe becasue you can post comments without even having an account. My experience is that most of the people complaining are just expecting something for free or are not smart enough to use an alarm system anyway.

Read the contract. Can't stress that enough.

We are in the business of making money, if you don't like us after our sweet talking than that's on you. I love ADT, I lie for a living and make money doing it lol.

As you can see from the person below who works for ADT in the FL 800# department, that gives you ALL the answers you need right there. Thanks 800# for making my life a living H** with ADT along with it's corupt management.

Guest

I too worked for ADT for 5 years after getting out from under one of the most corrupt corporations in North America. I had to train myself, I had to deal with customers complaining ALL the time about how rude the 800# is, their pricing just simply got out of hand.

When the economy got worse, ADT raised their prices lol. My manager would tell me (and keep in mind, I worked for ADT corportate) to tell them whatever it took to get the sale. This included, if the customer asked how long the contract was to just say one year. When they would ask why the contract says 3 years, I was told to tell them that if they wanted out to call me and I could get them out.

Ofcourse that never worked. Every rep was to give a 3 day right to cancel form to the customer, ALL the reps were told to NEVER give this to them and to throw it away. A lot of reps would not fill in the monthly monitoring amount until they left the house and it usually would be 3 times what they were told because the reps make a lot of money on the amount they charge you monthly. Everyone always says that you should read the contract.

When you have someone in front of you from a reputable company (so they seem) you have no doubt but to trust them because we all want to believe that most people are good and have good intentions. Sorry to all the people I lied to.

lied about 1year contract i think they should be takrn to court its companies like this that make our world a sad place to live :(

Guest

this company is made up of liers and when yuo refuse to pay because they arent holding up there end they try to take you to court.Well bring it on.I was suposed to get a 1 year contract it turns out it 3 i was suposed to get a commercial system to cover my whole shop and wharehouse and they lied I only got a residencial system that didnt cover the whole shop and none at all in the wharehouse.when i called to talk to someone about it they refused to return my calls and would not speak to me the only response I was able to get out of them was when i refused to pay them after 3 months now im getting threats from a collection agency.I will not pay this period I dont owe it.

I signed the 2 year contract, but they told me I couldn't quit when I tried to after the two years. They said they were going to pull my whole system out.

My sales person, originally gave me a paper confirming that they would not take my system out after the two years. (I will note it came out only after I mentioned my father was an attorney and that is why I was reading their contract so carefully). I don't think it is typical to get this sheet. In the end I told them they could sue me if they wanted to take the system out, but I did not authorize them to come on my property (advice from my father).

After that they left me alone. I would suggest not ever using ADT and if you have issues make an official complaint with the Better Business Bureau.

ADT rep lied to us about what would be installed. Guaranteed us that if our home was broken into, the burglar would not be able to stop the alarm, that the main control unit would be placed in our attic.

Nope, just put it right on our wall in the kitchen - and yep, all someone has to do is unplug the thing. Stay away from this company - overpriced & will tell you anything to get a sale.

Before spending over ร‚ยฃ900 (installation cost ) with ADT for a system + ร‚ยฃ30 month "monitoring fee"for 3 years, I feel they should they should make it clear that in the UK at least when our ADT alarm was activated, that our control panel would dial a *PREMIUM RATE* number.

I was very surprised to find premium rate charges on the phone bill for the line directly and solely connected to the ADT alarm on the many false alarms that have occurred and it was triggered to call.

We already paid for installation of a this new telephone line and it's line rental, and after paying ADT's Monthly fees we now realize that the whole outfit is geared up to take as much money from the customer as possible.

You'd think they'd not be using these kind of numbers for emergency comms- but it's lucrative and they do.

I'm very happy to be out of our ADT contract now and have found a company who can service and reprogram the ADT(well,Galaxy) units to dial free numbers in an emergency.

We now pay 66% less per month for monitoring and only sign for 1 year of.service at a time (this was impossible with ADT)

On the whole - they used to trade on a once exclusive business reliance and the presence of that logo on such premises

These days many other companies trim the financial fat from their operations and offer superior service with clearer costs from the outset now

It's not a given plus to have ADT printed on any outside Bell/siren box today. In fact Chances are - the person with that ADT box can't afford to keep it connected at ADT rates!

It was common practice for ADT to put in used backup batteries in our Galaxy unit,on many many occasions.

In our experience ADT was/is overpriced and looks for the maximum you will give them always, I feel glad to no longer be being "robbed" by them

Avoid unless you are very Rich.

ADT Security is a joke! And a ripoff too!

I know because I worked for them for almost 2 years as a commercial and residential service engineer in Arizona.

I designed, installed and tested technical security systems at US embassies and consulates before I retired from the USG and went to work for ADT. I am an electronic engineer and had specialized USG training in all aspects of technical security. I did military communications systems engineering for 23 years prior to working in security.

When ADT hired me, they promised 30 days of training and I got nothing! They also said I would earn $75k but it was less than half that amount. And ADT managers, who knew nothing about security, expected and demanded that service personnel do at least 7 service calls per day, regardless of the complexity of the problem. Service crews were sent out with no parts and often had to call other service personnel to see if they were nearby and had the part needed.

ADT installs alarm systems that do not work and when a burglary does happen, they tell the customer ADT is not liable since the customer did not test his alarm system monthly as they are supposed to do.

Most homeowners would not even know if their system was communicating or not with ADTs monitors (they either have a communication link over a telephone circuit or a wireless connection via a cell radio transmitter). I personally saw situations where the system was installed and not working properly and the customer had been paying for months or up to a year without knowing it.

Yet despite all the shortcomings, ADT sees fit to charge $30-40 a month for a false sense of security - it's all about profit and little to do with customer service and satisfaction.

And ADT has no installation standards, installer training, or spare parts on service trucks. I was sent to one customerรขโ‚ฌโ„ขs home which was about a 1 hour ride away; when I arrived he needed a few standard 1.5 volt batteries and I had none on my truck. I had to drive to the nearest Ace hardware and buy them using my own money. At other residences, I found the heavy alarm panel mounted with only drywall screws (it was falling off the wall), exposed conductors on wires, panels installed upside down, and sensors that had been installed days ago falling off.

ADT sales reps know little about security principles and how to design a proper alarm system. They advertize the $99 special, which is OK for a studio apartment at best, and then use the bait and switch scam to get the customer to shell out $1000 or more for an รขโ‚ฌล“expandedรขโ‚ฌย home alarm system. Sales reps are out to maximize the total sale dollar amount since they get paid on commission.

And ADT will take over any system ever installed by anyone else, as long as the customer pays the $30-40 monthly fee. Then ADT will not have trained personnel or parts to support these odd ball systems when they do fail.

Buyer beware! It is a known fact that a big guard dog is a better deterrent for burglary! And keep in mind that a critical factor for any alarm system is the time it takes for police to respond to the alarmรขโ‚ฌโ€œ if you are in a remote location and it takes 30 minutes for police to get there, burglars have this much time to crash and grab.

Due the tech lied to me. He said my cats could not set off my motion detector because they are less than 50 lbs.

Now my motion sensor is going off everytime it set it. Now they want to charge me to flip it over so it won't detect anything over 5ft tall. My cats jump all over the furniture and my reach ther 5 ft maximum - or maybe when they run up the stair the sensor will go off! My other issue is what happens if someone short breaks into my home?

Then nothing happens and I am dead in my bed!

Or someone could crawl on the ground and go undetected! I hate ADT and I am telling the world.

I honestly think that some of the ADT employees do make a bad name for the whole company. However there are some customers out there that read their contracts ask questions and never have a single problem.

Honestly if you have a problem with ADT call back you might actually get a rep that can help you and is willing.

Too many customers in any industry just want to gripe if you didn't read your contract thats your mistake; it's not fine print it's in big letters right above where you sign. Quit complaining and acknowledge the fact that there are some cases in which ADT or any company can't help you with your ignorance.

Guest

True. ADT does lie and steal.

As a former employee for nearly four years I got fed up with their corruption. I am now working full time at Protection One - we are the only Security Company listed on Forbes "Most Trusworthy Companies" nearly every year.

In fairness to Mr Joseph Morte, let me state that he and I did not meet. The facts regarding the signing of the contract came from my wife and two friends who witnessed the signing.

ADT HQ claimed the contract could not be altered without the consent of Mr. Morte. ADT also claimed they contacted Mr. Morte on my behalf on several occasions.

Thats what they told me. Did they really contact Joseph? I have no idea, but they claimed they did. My apologies to Joseph if this was not the case.

My gripe lies more with ADT the company than it does with Mr. Morte at this point. According to ADT, all the power lies with the sales rep, not upper management. This makes no sense whatsoever.

ADT HQ should have the power to override all contracts. They should have been able to fix the problem quickly and easily. If a consumer has a complaint, a good company will ty to fix the sitution or compromise on some level. ADT was very difficult to work with on every level and compromise was not in their vocabulary or company culture.

I contacted the Better Business Bureau to rectify the situation and was promptly contacted by ADT to tell me they had a resolution. Their resolution was to do nothing. I finally called the Attorney General and filed a formal complaint with the Consumers Affairs Office and they quickly took my case and got ADT to alter my contract to 11 months. Did they call Mr.

Morte to accomplish this?

No idea, probably not. I'm now done with ADT....FOREVER!

Guest

our freaking motion dedector does NOT work! we asked them twice to come and fix it, which they did until few days later it was messed up again and they would've kept coming to fix it and wasting our time....

UGHHH!

it was a BIG mess... :(

Why didn't you READ the contract??

Why do people never read the contract??

I am faceing this too. I was also told that I could cancell at any time.

I just got offf the phone with them and got The "Sorry there's nothing we can do " line also. Come to find out they signed me up for three years. Also I was told that my range of motion was alot bigger than it is. But since "I believed the manager and not the tech , it's my fault" I m sooooo livid.

The guy kept turning things around on me as if I was the liar.. But they told me that I will have to pay the $40.00 a mo.X's 3 years to cancell. WTF!!!!! :( .

I dont get it how comapnies can be so distorted.

I will for surely write a formal complaint to the FTC and BBB. Thanks for the info

we run a computer company, our place was robbed twice and both times, the alarm didnt go off, we complained to ADT and they send a technician who said everything is working when we questioned as to why didnt the alarm go off during the robbery he couldn't give us a straight answer, thus we finally informed them we are cancelling the services which they agreed. But they sent us an invoice stating that we owe them US$ 1500.00 (for two months services and early termination fee).

When we contacted their account services we were said the contract for five years. We said we didnt sign a contract for five years and the contract was only for an year stated by their salesman.

We are going to pursue legal action against the company. Those interested please write to this column we would take a collective action.
